SDG Project Management Scholarship

Supporting good work, done well

We live in a pivotal time of history when fast and effective action on climate change will determine the survival of entire ecosystems and the security and quality of life of future generations.

Against a backdrop of species extinction and increasing extreme weather events, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has given the world just twelve years to take radical action.

In 2015, the United Nations published 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to unite the world in moving toward a more sustainable future. Organisations across Australia have responded with creative, innovative and transformative projects aligned with the SDGs.

This includes environmental projects focussed on climate change action, the restoration and rehabilitation of habitats, saving endangered species, reducing emissions, and transitioning to waste-free societies serviced by renewable energy sources and sustainable food chains.

Other SDG-aligned projects deal with social justice, defending the voiceless, standing for gender equality, and closing the gap in Indigenous communities.

In support of ‘good work, done well’, Elemental Projects launched the SDG Project Management Scholarship in 2019, for project teams whose projects align with one or more of the 17 SDGs.

About the scholarship

The SDG Project Management Scholarship program seeks to maximise awareness and achievement of the SDGs by developing the knowledge, skills, networks and profiles of project managers with SDG-aligned projects.

In collaboration with the UN Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA), we are offering fully-funded scholarship for project managers and up to four of their team to attend our popular public training program ‘Elemental Project Management’.

This course involves six days of intensive, interactive and highly practical training, during which the team will workshop the following documents for their SDG-aligned project:

  • Project Charter
  • Project Management Plan
  • Project Status Report & RADICAL Register
  • Post Implementation Review

The scholarship also includes a short video produced about the team’s project for social media, as well as attendance at our annual celebration event for Elemental PM participants and graduates of the BSB51415 Diploma of Project Management.

Endorsed by the Australian Institute of Project Management, this six-day course has a proven track record of developing project managers with the capability, confidence and connections to delivery successful projects with lasting outcomes.

At the completion of the course, participants select an SDG-aligned project from their cohort to be nominated in the United Nations’ SDG Good Practices Awards.

The call to action for industry leaders

In 2016, over 30 CEOs from across industry issued a public CEO Statement of Support for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The Statement publicly recognised the importance of the private sector in advancing Australia’s contribution toward achieving the SDGs.

“Businesses that are able to offer solutions to the local and global sustainability challenges represented by the goals will build resilience, find new markets and position themselves competitively for the future…

The scope of the SDGs is broad, and businesses will find relevant points in the agenda that they can connect with and contribute to.”

– Alice Cope, Executive Manager of the Global Compact Network Australia (GCNA).
